Book Review: Dominion and Dynasty (NSBT), Stephen Dempster - spoiledmilks

Christian theologians rarely study the Old Testament in its final Hebrew canonical form, even though this was very likely the Bible used by Jesus and the early church. However, once read as a whole, the larger structure of the Hebrew Bible Tanakh provides a "wide-angle lens" through which its contents can be viewed. Dempster argues that, despite its undoubted literary diversity, the Hebrew Bible possesses a remarkable structural and conceptual unity. The various genres and books are placed within a comprehensive narrative framework which provides an overarching literary and historical context. The many texts contribute to this larger text, and find their meaning and significance within its story of "dominion and dynasty," which ranges from Adam to the Son of Man, from David to the coming Davidic king.

Is the Old Testament just a collection of loosely related books? Seeing the OT canon as a carefully composed Text, Dempster attempts to read it in a literary manner, emphasizing the unity. He holds that this is how the OT would have appeared to Jesus 36 , and therefore it is important for us to see it as He did. Taking this literary approach, Dempster particularly traces two prominent themes of dominion land and dynasty seed throughout the OT, showing just how cohesive the message of OT really is. The Old Testament really does have a plot and really does have prominent ongoing themes threading throughout the tapestry of stories and prophecy.

Review: Dominion and Dynasty by Stephen Dempster

Stephen G. New Studies in Biblical Theology. Here is a fresh approach to biblical theology. He traces the story beginning with Genesis through to Kings following the Hebrew ordering of books, that is from the Torah through the Former Prophets. The story resumes with Daniel and the rest of the Writings, concluding with Chronicles. Genesis and Chronicles bracket the story, to follow the Hebrew canon. The twin themes of dominion and dynasty, geography and genealogy Dempster likes alliteration govern the story.

There are 39 books in the OT. The Bible is a unity, but how do they all fit? How does Proverbs fit with Kings? Isaiah with Chronicles? Leviticus with Ecclesiastes? Stephen Dempster, Stuart E. Chapter 2 gives a short summary approach to what will follow in the book.

Dempster, Stephen G. In the writing of this book, Stephen Dempster has contributed a very insightful and thought-provoking contribution to the New Studies in Biblical Theology Series. Dempster, who is a distinguished professor in Religious studies in Canada, has many years of experience in studying the Biblical languages, theology, and redemptive history. With this background of extensive biblical knowledge he has written a book whereby he shows how the themes of dominion and dynasty are pervasive throughout the narrative of the Old Testament. While many different authors have written Old Testament theologies as well as Biblical theologies which identify other central themes running through the Scriptures, Dempster does a fine job showing evidence for the thesis that he is proposing, that throughout the Hebrew Bible one sees a focus both on dominion and dynasty.
