Milk and Honey by Rupi KaurBook Notes: Where we read and condense books down to their main takeaways for creatives. I have always found it hard to read and take in properly because I have been trained to read so fast that I lose all the rhythm. Then another friend recommended it, and another. The works are very raw and emotional, and while they are mainly about love and heartbreak and dealing with abuse and trauma, I was also struck by how many of the pieces applied directly to art and artists. Rupi talks about her mother putting crayons in her hand as a young child and telling her to make sense of the world by drawing, and all the sketches that accompany the poems are her own. They often work very closely with the written word, and give you an extra layer of meaning. I was lucky enough to attend her book launch this week for book 2, The Sun and Her Flowers , where Rupi and a group of other women performed the material live.

Her works have been at the forefront of a new genre of social-media-centered genre of short and easily accessible poetry - Instapoetry. She has been further subject to widespread scholarly attention and media fame, after using menstrual blood to create varied forms of visual poetry. Critical reviews of her literary works have been mostly negative. Kaur was born into a Sikh family in Punjab, India. She was inspired by her mother to draw and paint. She attended Turner Fenton Secondary School ,  before studying rhetoric and professional writing at the University of Waterloo. Rupi Kaur, the year-old Brampton, Ontario—based writer, has had a wildly successful year, ratcheting up more than , Instagram followers, along with public endorsements by such celebrities as Martha Stewart and Mark Ruffalo. Kaur was initially a visual artist who studied economics — later switching to rhetoric studies and professional writing — at the University of Waterloo, but began amassing a following for her writing on social media. Her self-published debut poetry collection, milk and honey , was released in November and sold 15, copies. How has this journey from self-published author to international book deal been for you? I was doing it all by myself, then all of a sudden I have this wonderful, established team. After I self-published, the book was very successful, but it really took a lot out of me.

In July, when Kaur uploaded a series of Instagram posts to announce her forthcoming second poetry collection — the sun and her flowers , to be released on Oct. Like her peers Nayyirah Waheed , Lang Leav , and, to a lesser extent, Warsan Shire whose work is more complex and has received more critical acclaim , Kaur produces bite-size, accessible poems. Their free verse poetry eschews difficult metaphors in favor of clear, plain language, and this accessibility is precisely what has garnered the new wave of " Instapoets " such a large and dedicated following.
