The fifth and most recent volume of the series, A Dance with Dragons , was published in and took Martin six years to write. He is currently writing the sixth novel, The Winds of Winter. The point of view of each chapter in the story is a limited perspective of a range of characters growing from nine in the first novel, to 31 characters by the fifth novel. Three main stories interweave: a dynastic war among several families for control of Westeros, the rising threat of the supernatural Others in northernmost Westeros, and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen , the deposed king's exiled daughter, to assume the Iron Throne.

The Lands of Ice and Fire , which came out last month , is a collection of maps of the lands of George R. Open the box and you see two sleeves containing six maps apiece. Each map is 24 by 30 inches, single sided, in full colour, and on glossy paper, the kind you can see your fingerprints on. Some Amazon reviewers have expressed concern about wear and tear from folding and unfolding the maps; bear that in mind. If it has, please send me a copy immediately. I guess I was expecting faded parchment.

The publishers have gone into this with the knowledge that this is a luxury item for fans and have produced something that fits that bill. The maps are wonderfully drawn representations of the world, as you can see below:. The artwork is lovely and very finely detailed and the twelve maps that the set come with are printed on a nice glossy page.

The entire world map of Game of Thrones stretches past the Bone Mountains that divide Essos down the middle, over to the far East. Those distant lands include Asshai, in the Land under Shadow, with the mysterious and luminous ghost grass, as well as Carcosa, and Leng — both Lovecraft references that make it into Game of Thrones on the very edge of the world.
