Logistics Back to Basics - Inbound Logistics
Logistics can confound the newly initiated and veterans alike. So take out your notebook, sharpen your pencil, and take this Inbound Logistics short course on the fundamental concepts driving logistics theory and practice today. Until recently, logistics activities had one primary focus—to minimize unit transportation costs for shipments to downstream customers. Systems theory espouses managing an enterprise or organization as an integrated whole for total optimal performance—lowest total costs and optimum service level, for example—as opposed to managing discrete functions individually for lowest costs. But if you ask, 'What is it costing us to have the inventory sit on the warehouse floor for a few more days, you start to see the real cost of that decision. Smith School of Business. If you ship by rail, you may reduce your transportation costs, but your inventory carrying and packaging costs go up.Module 1: What is Supply Chain Management? (ASU-WPC-SCM) - ASU's W. P. In commerce , supply-chain management SCM , the management of the flow of goods and services, [2] involves the movement and storage of raw materials , of work-in-process inventory , and of finished goods from point of origin to point of consumption. Interconnected, interrelated or interlinked networks, channels and node businesses combine in the provision of products and services required by end customers in a supply chain. An example of these conflicts is the interrelation between the sale department desiring to have higher inventory levels to fulfill demands and the warehouse for which lower inventories are desired to reduce holding costs.
Logistics 101: Back to Basics

Despite the recent debate on theories, logistics and SCM research still lacks a focus on theory development. Research will undoubtedly advance through rigorous empirical approaches, such as the use of structural equation modeling SEM within theory construction. SEM is well established in many fields of economic research, as it allows for validity of the structures and constructs in proposed theoretical models to be tested. This paper discusses the contribution of SEM to theory development and presents guidelines for the application of SEM to analyze both measurement and structural models. It exemplifies the use of SEM to capture and analyze the impact of logistics on the performance of companies. Based on a sample of German companies, it emerges that logistics service levels have a greater impact on the performance of companies than logistics costs.

This contributed volume presents state-of-the-art advances in logistics theory in various fields as well as case studies. The book reports on a number of recently conducted studies in the Dinalog and the EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr, thus bridging the gap between different perspectives of theoretical and applied research. The editors carefully selected contributions from a wide variety of projects, which were carried out in both the Dinalog cluster and the Effizienzcluster LogistikRuhr.
The BSc Hons Logistics Management programme has been designed to develop students' capacity to successfully manage people, operations and systems within a logistics environment.
