Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Process and Instrument Drawings (P&IDs)

Figure 1. As an alternative, each pipe can be numbered, and the specifics of every line can be provided in a separate table accompanying this diagram. When possible, the physical size of the larger-sized unit operations is reflected by the size of the symbol in the diagram. The number within the box identifies the specific utility. This includes the information to be recorded and used in process control loops. The circular flags on the diagram indicate where the information is obtained in the process and identify the measurements taken and how the information is dealt with.

P&ID Diagrams

Process flow diagrams PFDs are used in chemical and process engineering. These diagrams show the flow of chemicals and the equipment involved in the process. Generally, a Process Flow Diagram shows only the major equipment and doesn't show details. PFDs are used for visitor information and new employee training. It includes major and minor flows, control loops and instrumentation. These diagrams are also called flowsheets. In both diagrams arrows show the flow of material and symbols show tanks, valves, and other equipment.

They are typically created by engineers who are designing a manufacturing process for a physical plant. With the record they provide, changes can be planned safely and effectively using Management of Change MOC.

Superordinate to the piping and instrumentation diagram is the process flow diagram PFD which indicates the more general flow of plant processes and the relationship between major equipment of a plant facility. During the design stage, the diagram also provides the basis for the development of system control schemes, allowing for further safety and operational investigations, such as a Hazard and operability study HAZOP. To do this, it is critical to demonstrate the physical sequence of equipment and systems, as well as how these systems connect. Modifications are red-penned onto the diagrams and are vital records of the current plant design. The identifications consist of up to 5 letters. This is followed by loop number, which is unique to that loop.
