Ransom: A Novel

In this exquisite gem of a novel, Achilles is maddened by grief at the death of his friend Patroclus. There must be a way, he thinks, of reclaiming the body - of pitting compromise against heroics, new ways against the old, and of forcing the hand of fate. Dressed simply and in a cart pulled by a mule, an old man sets off for the Greek camp David Malouf. He was born in and was brought up in Brisbane. Our Lists.

In Tomis, Ovid, doomed and apart, senses that he must acquire in simplicity a new kind of wisdom:. To paraphrase Ovid, these exiles will be separated from themselves and yet be alive. In Ransom — like An Imaginary Life a kind of extended prose poem — Malouf draws on the closing books of The Iliad , the epic poem in 15, lines of hexameter verse, so named by Herodotus. In this state of exhaustion and petulant stasis, Achilles — breaker of men, the raging son of Peleus — recalls his first glimpse of Patroclus when they were boys. Homer tells us little of this famous pact; Malouf, likewise succinct, describes the instant attraction. And the boy, his clear eyes still fixed on Achilles, takes it … They were mated. But darkly, flesh to ghost.

In this case, the change becomes of paramount importance in Ransom as King Priam dares to reimagine his role by stepping outside convention and inventing a different path. In this retelling, or retold story, Malouf foregrounds the central act of ransom and refashions a novel for our times. During war-time in ancient Greek history, women were taken as booty of war, while men were either ransomed or killed on the battlefield. Generally, a prisoner of war remained as a hostage, while a ransom was raised. It was a fee paid to the victor. Both Agamemnon and Achilles had received the young women Chryseis and Briseis as prizes of war or war brides which embroiled them both in a tug of war, about pride and honor. Agamemnon had to return Chryseis to the priest of Apollo if he wanted the plague to end, which he did, but only on the condition that he take possession of the war prize of Achilles — Briseis — as a replacement.

Malouf considers the Iliad the greatest literary work in existence, but he also reserves special praise for writers like Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. As far as his fellow Australians go, he cites Patrick White as a particular source of inspiration. An Eye for an Eye…or a Heel. As Ransom hints, Achilles would not survive the Trojan War either. According to legend, Paris shot Achilles in his only weak spot: the heel his mother Thetis held onto while dipping him in the River Styx to make him otherwise invulnerable.
