Small gas engines serve us in many ways. They power lawn mowers, tillers, cultivators, trimmers, edgers, snowblowers, chain saws, pumps, generators, air compressors, and other useful home tools. They also power our fun: outboard boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, ultralight aircraft, and other toys. To keep them operating efficiently, an owner of these tools and toys should know about small engines: how they work and what to do when they don't. Small gas engines are made up of individual systems that work together to produce power. Each system has many components.

Regular maintenance is absolutely imperative if you want a diesel engine to last, and every diesel owner will probably encounter some pitfalls and problems. Although diesel engines require no ignition tune-ups and tend to last longer without major repairs than gasoline engines, they do require regular low-cost maintenance, mostly in the form of frequent oil and filter changes. The urea injection systems that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions also need refilling, which is usually done as part of regularly scheduled maintenance.

A small engine is the general term for a wide range of small-displacement, low-powered internal combustion engines used to power lawn mowers , generators , concrete mixers and many other machines that require independent power sources. Engines of similar design and displacement are also used in smaller vehicles such as motorcycles , motor scooters , all-terrain vehicles , and go-karts. The engines are small in both physical dimensions and power output, relative to larger automobile engines. The most common configuration is a single-cylinder engines that is air-cooled. The combustion cycle can be either two-stroke which results in a lighter engine for a given power output [3] [4] or four-stroke which produce lower levels of exhaust gas emissions.
