How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read? | Freakonometrics

Books You Don't Know. There is more than one way not to read, the most radical of which is not to open a book at all. For any given reader, however dedicated he might be, such total abstention necessarily holds true for virtually everything that has been published, and thus in fact this constitutes our primary way of relating to books. We must not forget that even a prodigious reader never has access to more than an infinitesimal fraction of the books that exist. As a result, unless he abstains definitively from all conversation and all writing, he will find himself forever obliged to express his thoughts on books he hasn't read. If we take this attitude to the extreme, we arrive at the case of the absolute non-reader, who never opens a book and yet knows them and talks about them without hesitation.

Pierre Bayard is a Paris-based professor of French literature. As such, he is a practised charlatan, a literary bullshitter, a professional 'non-reader'. Bayard is infiltrating a 'forbidden subject', an area equivalent to 'finance and sex' in its secrecy. Despite society's 'worship' of reading, he avers, we are most of us heathens, even among the literary elite. And quite right, too: why waste time reading Joyce and Proust when you can talk about them - or skim the work of others? Taking it as given that no one actually reads for the pleasure of the process, Bayard proceeds to investigate the meaning of bibliographic cultural capital. It implies an engagement with literature and is different from mere 'absence of reading'.

Literature becomes not a container of absolute knowledge but a compass for orienteering ourselves to and in the world and its different contexts, books become not isolated objects but a system of relational understanding:. As cultivated people know and, to their misfortune, uncultivated people do not , culture is above all a matter of orientation.

The book is great… and I have identified a lot of things that can be observed if you work as an academic. Not only in literature. So obviously, there should be good reasons not to read books. Good librarian do not read! It would take me ten thousand years to carry out my plan. So clearly, if we want an overview of a given scientific field, we just go through titles, and abstracts if we have time ….
