Gadsby by Ernest Vincent Wright

The following are excerpts from "Gadsby" by Ernest Vincent Wright, a novel written entirely without using the letter E. The Mu has never had such a difficult time finding a copy of a book than with Gadsby. After a search of over a year and half, he stumbled across a copy at the New York City public library, where he had to repeatedly beg to be allowed to examine their damaged copy in a special, enclosed room. As I wrote along, in long-hand at first, a whole army of little E's gathered around my desk, all eagerly expecting to be called upon. But gradually as they saw me writing on and on, without even noticing them, they grew uneasy; and, with excited whisperings amongst themselves, began hopping up and riding on my pen, looking down constantly for a chance to drop off into some word; for all the world like seabirds perched, watching for a passing fish! Why, man! This is the first time we ever were shut out!

The Book without the letter E

You Won't Find the Letter "E" in Either of These Two Novels

Sales of the Wetzel version numbered only 50, out of a few hundred printed. The remainder of its stock was lost to a warehouse fire, making it incredibly rare. Reprints of the work have surfaced since Wetzel Publishing Co. The entire manuscript of this story was written with the E type-bar of the typewriter tied down ; thus making it impossible for that letter to be printed. This was done so that none of that vowel might slip in, accidentally; and many did try to do so! In writing such a story,—purposely avoiding all words containing the vowel E, there are a great many difficulties.

I magine writing a 50,word novel without using the letter 'e'. That might seem a rather pointless challenge but you can read just such a book - Gadsby by Ernest Vincent Wright, a self-published story from Gadsby's text is a lipogram - a form of writing where a letter, or even a number of letters if you are so inclined, are omitted. Apparently, 'e' is the most common letter to cast aside for such challenges and that means the author cannot use words such as 'the', 'he', 'she', 'have', and 'they'. Gadsby tells the story of a fictional city called Branton Hills, which is revitalized as a result of the efforts of its new mayor, John Gadsby, and a group of young people. This book is the gold standard for lipograms - not for the plot or narrative but the author's sheer wondrous achievement. Wright could not even apply 'ed' to past tense verbs.

Gadsby is a novel by Ernest Vincent Wright written as a lipogram , which does not include words that contain the letter E. The plot revolves around the dying fictional city of Branton Hills, which is revitalized as a result of the efforts of protagonist John Gadsby and a youth group he organizes. Though vanity published and little noticed in its time, the book has since become a favorite of fans of constrained writing and is a sought-after rarity among some book collectors. Later editions of the book have sometimes carried the alternative subtitle 50, Word Novel Without the Letter "E". Despite Wright's claim, published versions of the book may contain a handful of uses of the letter "e". The version on Project Gutenberg , for example, contains "the" three times and "officers" once. In the introduction to the book which, not being part of the story, does contain the letter 'e' Wright says his primary difficulty was avoiding the "-ed" suffix for past tense verbs.

And the garbage bag is not a great look, either. So there are easier letters to omit if you decide to construct a lipogram—a text that deliberately omits a particular letter—no matter what your nationality.
