Ruth was three years old when her sister was born. Like most firstborn children, Ruth assumed her younger sibling would be a miniature version of herself. Sisters Ruth and Millie find themselves back in each other's lives after a long estrangement when Millie and her son turn up on Ruth's doorstep needing a place to stay. While the two help the war effort by working at an armory factory in Massachusetts, their past secrets bubble to the surface. But when World War Two brings them together again, they find themselves further apart than ever.

Sisters Millie and Ruth have seemingly been at odds since the day Millie was born. When handsome, charming Lenny arrives on the scene, during a period of extreme sadness for Millie, her parents dislike him immediately. Despite years of being passed over for her sister by potential husbands, Ruth finds Arthur, a brilliant and kind scientist with whom she immediately falls in love. Lenny starts out sweet, kind and doting toward Millie—and no one can deny his movie star good looks. When Ruth finds that her sister is left a war widow, alone and penniless, she sends for Millie and her son Michael to come live with them.
